Search Monday, 8 March 2021 Silence 6.4°C Search Search Dear Dr. Nina, I've become very clumsy lately. Should I worry? The clumsiness can be a sign of stress/Nina Byrnes April 18, 2017 02:30 AM I'm a man at the end of 40. In the last four to six months, I notice that I have become unusually clumsy - I have touched glasses on many occasions, and I have left my phone and other objects with a regularity that is not typical for me. Throughout most of my life, I have been quite dexterious: my hobbies have included the fly-throwing for fishing, which implies a high degree of precision with small objects. As I know people who constantly hit things and leave things, I've always had a good sense of spatial consciousness. Is this something that comes with getting older or could there be an underlying condition that causes this that might have to be checked? We can all be clumsy from time to time, but if you suddenly find yourself uncoordinated on a regular basis, it's worth exploring. Coordination is a complex process involving the entry of the eyes that travel to the brain, which sends messages to our various muscles, bones and nerves. Breaking anywhere along this pathway can have a significant impact. Common culprits include poor vision, strokes, brain or head injuries, muscle damage and weakness, arthritis or joint problems, inactivity, infection or disease, drugs and alcohol, and of course, stress or fatigue. A sudden change in coordination can suggest a localized blow. It's a medical emergency. The brain tissue begins to die at a rate of up to two million brain cells at a minute if the blood supply is reduced or cut. Stranglements are more common in those over 60 years of age but may occur at any age, even in children. Recognition of signs and rapid performance can reduce the chances of brain damage and long-term disability. The acronym FAST is used to draw attention to the signs of a stroke and to underline the importance of seeking urgent medical help. 'F' means 'face': has the face fallen aside and can the person smile? 'A' means 'arms': can you lift both arms above your head and keep them there? 'S' means 'talking': Has the person's speech been dazzled? Finally, 'T' means 'time'. Other less classic signs of stroke may include confusion, loss of balance or dizziness, blur or loss of vision and sudden headache. If medicines are given for early bleeding (in 3-4 hours) in the case of a clot, permanent paralysis or nerve damage may be avoided. The strokes due to bleeding are more difficult to treat. Risk factors for the stroke include family history of stroke, arterial hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, smoking and excess alcohol consumption. They are very similar to those of other heart and vascular disorders. Stranglement can cause temporary or permanent disability. Unfortunately, in some cases, permanent disability remains. Stranglement kills more people every year than breast, lung, and combined intestine cancer. Of those who survive, 65pc will make a reasonable recovery. Prevention is better but every minute counts. If you think someone you know is having a stroke, call an ambulance. Don't be late. If the appearance of clumsiness occurs more gradually but is consistent, other types of brain injury, tumor, or disease should be considered. Your PG can do a complete neurological exam and send you for a brain scan or to see a specialist as appropriate. The clumsiness associated with oblivion can be a sign of stress, especially if it is worse in stressful situations. These symptoms, without any obvious link, much more rarely can be a sign of early-initiated Alzheimer's. If no sinister or serious cause is found, it may simply be that coordination between your eyes, brain and musculoskeletal system is not what it should be. There are physiotherapists who can prescribe specific exercises to improve their coordination of eye muscles. In this case, exercise and a healthy toned muscle system can greatly improve the situation. Q My child sounds very nasal and when he tries to say 's', the sound seems to come from his nose. Is something wrong with you? Sounds like there's enlarged adenoids. Adenoids are lymphatic tissues, similar to tonsils, but are found at the top of the throat behind the nose. Unlike tonsils, they are not visible in a mouth exam. Adenoids, like tonsils, help our bodies fight the infection. They are very active early in life and can be enlarged enough. They usually start to decline from about five years of age, almost disappearing for the teenage years. Extended adenoids can cause a nasal tone to the voice. Other symptoms may include mouth breathing - leading to a dry mouth and cracked lips - along with snoring, noisy breathing or restless sleep. Those with large adenoids may also have recurrent ear infections or tail ear. It's worth checking with your GP. The large adenoids that cause the tail ear can lead to a reduced hearing, which can have a shock effect on speech development. A hearing test can evaluate this. An X-ray of the nasal area and the neck can show enlarged adenoids. In softer conditions, PG may prescribe antibiotics and nasal drops to help clean any infection and allow adenoids to shrink. If the symptoms are recurrent or are not settled, although, or if there is apnea of the associated sleep (pausing breathing in sleep), it is likely that it is referred to a specialist in the ear, nose and throat (ENT), which can confirm the diagnosis. In this case surgery may be required. Adenoids are removed through the mouth and without healing results. It is usually done as a case-of-day procedure. General anesthesia is required, but complications are rare. Rarely, nasal speech is not associated with a medical cause. Speech and language therapy can be useful to improve speech in this case.
